Writers Conferences, Seminars and Workshops


    • Clarion - Michigan State University - Lansing, Michigan - This is the original version of this quintessential boot camp for science fiction, fantasy and horror writers. Originally started at Clarion State College in Pennsylvania it is now located in Michigan and has spawned a western version noted below. Approximately a third of those who have attended have gone on to publish, including such greats as Octavia Butler and Ed Bryant.

    • The Odyssey Summer Fantasy Writing Workshop - Manchester, New Hampshire - Early admission starts January 31. This is an intensive experience of six weeks of fantasy, science fiction and horror writing workshop run by World Fantasy Award winning editor Jeanne Cavelos. This year's guests include Terry Bisson, Ellen Kushner, Allen Steele, and more. The site has complete info on the workshop plus writing tips, links, guest lecturer transcriptions and more

    • Clarion West Science Fiction Workshop - Seattle, Washingtion - This is the western version of this quintessential book camp for the aspiring science fiction, fantasy or horror writer. In addition to the workshop, it is the source for an exemplary reading series that takes place at the same time as the workshop and open to the general public.

    • Creative Journeys: Writing Workshops for Women is a series of workshops, many already past or some coming up specifically for women offered by Gail B. Balden.

    • Write-to-Publish Conference, June 7 - 10, 2006 Wheaton/Chicago. Classes for beginners through professionals, meetings with editors and agents, manuscript evaluations, and optional college credit.     • June 22 - 25, 2006 - Writers Weekend 2006 - Bellevue, Washington is a Seattle-area writer's conference with Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery and Romance authors, editors and literary agents in attendance. Master classes and individual appointments with agents, though it has morphed over time into a series of events taking place throughout the year. Check it out and see if one of these events is right for you.

    • The 2006 Backspace Writers Conference describes iteself as bringing together "best-selling authors, top agents, and editors for a two-day, two-track event featuring panel discussions, workshops, pitch sessions and socializing in the heart of the publishing world. Serious writers in all genres are invited to come meet the people who can make a difference in their writing career. Attendance limited to 150."

    • Vancouver International Writers and Readers Festival taking place October 17th - 22nd, 2006 in Vancouver, BC, Canada, is much as it sounds and has as its guest Michael McCourt. Check out details on their web site.
